Practice makes perfect

I was looking through my old blog cake pictures earlier today to add the pictures to my new baking blog :Sugar Castles- sugarcastlescakes.blogspot.com . I found this picture of a cake I did for a bridal shower in 2008. Now, mind you, when I did this cake I thought it was hard. It was a challenge for me and i remember worrying about it as I made it.It didnt come out horrible, it was okay. For a beginner. The edges of the fondant are lumpy. The outline of the ribbon isnt straight. Everyone loved it at work.

But then I looked at my most recent cake. It was a birthday cake for the doctor I work for. I searched online until i found something I was excited to create. A real challenge for me. I worreid about it, yes. But I now think the first cake above- the shower one- would be so EASY and boring to make now. I like the two-tiered cakes and stacking and thinking of little accessories to put on top. Isnt it neat how you can learn to do things by yourself, without training? Brothers Bakery taught me some things, sure. But most of what I learned is by trial and error. This hobby is so fun. :) (Please excuse the counter behind the cake, i should have cleaned it off before taking this picture!)
